Background: Acute and chronic skin lesions continue to be a considerable medical problem as they hinder the process of tissue recovery due to prolonged inflammation and the likelihood of complications. Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), also referred to as photobiomodulation, has been utilized to enhance the process of skin wound healing as it improves cell functioning and activities related to inflammatory reactions. Nevertheless, additional evidence still needs to be collected in the process of clinical examination to explain its efficiency in relation to skin wound healing and inflammatory markers.
Objective: The goal of this study was to investigate the efficiency of Low-Level Laser Therapy in skin wound treatment on the basis of clinical signs, information concerning inflammatory markers, tissue perfusion, and pain intensity levels.
Methods: A randomized prospective controlled clinical study was done on patients suffering from superficial skin injuries. A total of 360 subjects were recruited for the study and divided into experimental (low-level laser therapy (LLLT)) and control (standard management) groups. Weekly clinical assessments were done for four weeks. During the study, wound healing data was collected in terms of wound healing percentage, and serum concentrations of TNF-α, IL-6, and CRP were measured pre-and post-study. Pain status was evaluated by the VAS test, while tissue perfusion was studied by a non-invasive method. Statistical analysis was conducted appropriately, and a P-value of less than 0.05 was used to indicate statistical significance.
Results: Low-Level Laser Therapy was shown to close the wounds significantly better than the control group. In fact, lowest level laser therapy was able to achieve 91.8% closure rate as compared to 68.3% achieved by the control group at Week 4 (P < 0.001). There were significant decreases in TNF-alpha, IL-6 and CRP concentration in the blood after laser treatment compared to traditional treatment (P < 0.001). At the same time, the pain level of patients was lower after laser treatment and tissue perfusion was higher, complete healing and patient satisfaction were also higher.
Conclusion: Laser therapy at low levels can significantly speed up the healing of wounds. This is possible because low-level laser therapy reduces inflammation, improves blood circulation, and helps with recovery. These results encourage the use of the technique - photobiomodulation, in the treatment of wounds of human skin.
