Objectives: These changes raise the risk of falls and threaten independence. This study tested whether combining balance-functional training with ginseng supplementation could improve these four outcomes in adults aged 60 to 75.
Methods: Thirty-six older adults were randomly split into three groups of 12: training plus ginseng, training alone, and control. The training groups did balance-functional exercises for six weeks, three sessions per week. The supplement group took 300 to 500 mg of ginseng daily. Dynamic balance was measured with the TUG test, flexibility with the Sit and Reach test, functional capacity with the 6-minute walk test, and physical function with the SPPB. Data were analyzed using Mixed ANOVA and Bonferroni post-hoc tests (P < 0.05).
Results: In the training plus ginseng group, all variables got better (P < 0.001).Dynamic balance time dropped by 18.82%. Flexibility rose by 32.56%. Functional capacity went up by 18.27%. Physical function grew by 50.54%. The training-only group also improved, but less. The control group showed no changes. Mixed ANOVA showed a significant group × time interaction for all variables (P < 0.001).Post-hoc tests showed that the combined group differed from the training-only group in flexibility, functional capacity, and physical function (P < 0.001).
Conclusion: Combining balance-functional training with ginseng supplementation led to greater improvements in flexibility, functional capacity, and physical function compared to training alone. In dynamic balance, the difference between the two groups was not significant. These findings suggest that this combination may help improve some physical function outcomes in older adults.
